Amor en el Aire

English Version Follows Below:

I had to write about this experience in Spanish first, since it was deeply related to my cultural identity, and my first experience living in Puerto Rico. Here is an abridged translation.

Yesterday on the Latin TV stations, Televisa and Univision, they announced the death of an excellent Spanish singer and actress, Rocio Durcal. Rocio Durcal, not her real name, Maria de los Angeles Hera..., fought a long battle with cancer. May she rest in peace. She starred in about 15 Spanish movies which came out in the 1960s primerally. She went on to continue to develop her singing career in all of Latin America, but in large measure in Mexico. As a teenager, my cousins and I, had little means of transportation, so we went to a small movie theatre down the street from my house in Las Lomas. The theater was at el UMBO, and today the movie theatre has been replaced business offices and a grocery store. Then it was our place of entertainment being that there were only about three to four TV channels, and these were mostly in black and white. Thus, going to the movies was quite entertaining. So one day we went to the movies and I saw Rocio Durcal for the first time. She had a beautiful voice and seemed to be a role model of all the qualities I wanted to have. Most of the characters in her movies were, sponteanous, innocent (like myself),lively, happy go lucky, well dressed, attractive, mostly Cinderella type, and she used impeccable Spanish, which as a new comer to Puerto Rico I mostly massacred. It was there at EL UMBO that I saw at least four of her movies, Mas Bonita que Ninguna (The Preetiest of them All), Acompañame (Come with Me), Buenos Dias Condesita (Good Morning Little Contess), and Amor en el Aire (Love in the Air).

It was also at this theatre that I went through one of my most embarrassing moments. I was in the theatre, completely immersed in the movie when some uncouth person from the back of the theatre threw a big wad of gum into my hair which landed smack in the back of my head, clinging onto my long brown hair. Being a young girl, I looked back and there were many people sitting in the back of the theatre. How could I find out who had thrown it? So I just grabbed the gum and pulled the sticky guey gum out of my hair as well as I could. The disgrace was having to walk out of the theatre and give that jerk the satisfaction of seeing the damage he had caused, so instead I threw some of my unaffected hair on it and tried to walk out with as much dignity as I had left and of course in a rather loud voice I said whoever had done it was a real jerk, of course in Spanish. That ruined my UMBO theatre going from then on. The next time I went I was constantly turning around to see who was around, so I eventually stopped going there, and frankly I got a lot busier, with school, reading for pleasure, going on trips and country rides, boyfriends, the beach, dancing, and dating to even go to the movies consistently at least not EL UMBO. Yet the memory of all those movies still remains, and I guess I would go through it again just to see them, but of course, this time though I would definitely wear a protective beret.

Very poetic. Estabas llena de passion.

Poetic? Ummm, tell me more. I was only full of memories. About the passion did you say that because of "desgraciado y mequetrefe?" Yeah, I was a little of upset because of the gratuitous personal attack on my hair!

Your Spanish was flowery and full of emotion. That is what I meant.
